William Coogan (1844-1927)
William sent this photograph, bearing his signature, to his niece "Miss Katie Coogan," daughter of his brother James. Earlier, when he left Ireland in 1868, William had gone alone to the port because the only relative he had outside the monastery was his sister Margaret, who gave birth to a son later in the evening that William bade her farewell and journeyed to the immigrant ship. William probably did not visit a photography shop in the port town. However, soon after his arrival in America, he visited James, and since neither brother had been photographed when he emigrated, they had a photo taken together similar to the emigration photo of Patrick with James.
