Mount Saint Joseph Abbey
The grave site of Michael Coogan, Brother Declan, lies just beyond the nave end of this massive church at the Abbey, built within a few years of the arrival of the founders from Mt. Melleray. The Abbey offers more than 400 acres of wooded walks, some with sites of devotion such as the statue of Muire an Cnoic (Mary of the Hill) and Chriost na n-Easanna (Christ of the waterfalls). Stained glass windows depict the lives of Christ, St. Brendan, St. Ciaran and many other saints. These hint of the splendid art, architecture, and history for which this abbey, in Ireland's monastic midlands, is known to those who visit regularly for retreats and re-invigoration of the spirit.
We thank the Cistercians of Mount St. Joseph for the opportunity to visit and to photograph the buildings and grounds.
